(See Patent #5,921,536 for Snap Jaws) The problem with this system is that it requires a special vise jaw with a “t-slot”, which means that the user must use this special vise jaw. They are expensive to purchase and if the user wants to make they own, they are difficult to manufacture. Presumably for a T-Slot Vise since that’s what the Subject was (though if it were a vice, it would probably be illegal). Newer Kurt vises utilize pre-machined dowel holes for installing rectangle style sine keys for t-slot mounting. For mounting on grid plates or other fixtures. 2 large chip evacuation slots are strategically located on each side of the vise to allow a good flow of chips while at the same time not diminishing the vise’s body strength. The vise body is also reinforced with a thicker rib to support the pulling mechanism when clamping.

Vis in French means screw. If the vise made its way to America via the French, then the VISE spelling makes a lot of sense. Actually, it makes more sense than using the same spelling as that for a character flaw.
My 2 centavos (to avoid spelling cents, or scents, or sense) 🙂

Sorry , but I can’t resist this 😊
“VICE

  • A metal tool with movable jaws which are used to hold an object firmly in place while work is done on it, typically attached to a workbench.”

(can also be spelled “vise” in the US )
